It’s an obscure title, mentioned but not fully explained in the five books in the series yet. Tonight, HBO premiered the first episode of its new show Game of thrones prequel series Dragon Housebased on Martin’s Targaryen family history titled fire and blood. In this first episode, Martin finally reveals what “Song of Fire and Ice” actually is, and the revelation puts the context back in perspective. Targaryens have a prophecy in their history. Whether it’s the result of coming from the legendary Valyria with its bloody magic or simply one of the things that make the Targaryens so special is unclear. It is the gift of insight, manifested in the young dreamer Daine, who provided a warning about Valkyria’s coming doom, which allowed her father, Einar Targaryen, to escape freehold 12 years before the catastrophe that destroyed all her other homes and foundation. Dragon HouseThe first episode is about King Viserys I choosing his heir. With no sons in his name, the choice comes to either his brother, a demon or his daughter, Rhinera. After a quarrel with Daemon, he chooses Rhaenyra, but must first tell her the royal secret.
If the stories are to be believed, Aegon I Targaryen, later known as Aegon the Conqueror, had prophetic dreams himself. One of these dreams involves the appearance of darkness in the north that will overwhelm the world of the living. Only Westeros united under a strong leader can hope to stand against this tide. This prophecy is a hymn of ice and fire.
Simply put, Egon predicted the arrival of the White Walkers centuries before it did. That is why Aegon conquered the Seven Kingdoms and united them under the rule of the Targaryen. This secret prophecy was passed down from one king to another to highlight the importance of ensuring the continuation of the Targaryen dynasty and the survival of the world as one. And here, Viserys relays this information to his daughter.
But the chain of prophecy was broken when Robert’s rebellion broke the chain of Targaryen’s rule. Since the remaining two Targaryens, Viserys, and Daenerys, were only children at the time of the rebellion, they would not have known of the prophecy. Daenerys later heard that it was spoken of in a vision while visiting the House of the Immortals. In her vision, she heard Rhaegar Targaryen talking about his son Aegon. He says: He is the promised prince, and he has the anthem of ice and fire. Knowing what we know now, it seems that Rhaegar thought this new Aegon would be the one who would fulfill Aegon the Conqueror’s prophecy (and given the timing of the White Walker’s invasion, he might have been right had it not been for Robert’s rebellion).
